Early 2017, I had the chance to join one of the most prestigious and world renowned telecommunication tech company in the Philippines. Nokia is a global brand that truly showcased ingenuity and diversity, paving the way for the latest technology in 5G. I was fortunate enough to join the development team of this new technology.
I started out as a research and development engineer for Nokia. When I started, I remember struggling so much since I had no prior experience from telecommunications and had zero knowledge, but as I started on-boarding with the company, I was guided wonderfully by my seniors and eventually was able to gain knowledge and was able to contribute to the project. Telecom industry has a very broad applications for technological advancements, and working with Nokia really made engineers satisfy their curiosity and pursuit for knowledge. Everyone will continually give you opportunities to improve yourself and company’s portfolio.
As a junior developer, this really boosted my personal growth and performance for both soft and technical skills. Working for an enterprise level of caliber work environment really shaped a lot of the things I really value right now. The way of work was really efficient despite the fear or bureaucracy of a large company, the teams are able to perform better, decentralize most of the decisions, and are empowered to make crucial decisions on their own. Local management was very supportive and are people oriented. HR was really top of the class, I’d say probably the top in the entire Philippines.
I worked with 5G technology, and was able to lead a scrum team for 2 years. This really honed my management skills, and was able to develop most of my soft skills today. We were constantly working with different colleagues, both foreign and local, from different teams working on the same project. Software development for the 5G solution was really engaging for the most of us, and the challenges that we encountered were very unique and interesting. Up to this day of writing, I believe my team was the best team that I ever had the privilege of working with.
Working with Nokia was the best move for me professionally, and I am truly grateful.
