I worked for Vertere as a contractual Project Manager, good for 1 year, and is subject to review for renewal annually. Coming off from Ticket2Me, I joined Vertere because of one enticing detail – the client.
ABS-CBN is the most popular broadcasting network in the country, prior to it being shut-downed by the government administration. They had a wide-variety of projects as you could imagine, for such a huge enterprise. They have multiple business units that needed a technology support and that was the DCIT department, their software solution arm. It was exciting working there, since you get to have the perks of working with a big broadcasting network. It’s true, there’s lots of artists in the ABS-CBN compound, you could see artists come and go on a daily basis, and I have to admit, that was really a fun experience.
The actual work there, not so much. As you can imagine from a big enterprise they also have a demanding work. Projects have steep deadlines and managing them is vital to the success of the products being developed. I was onboarded with a couple of projects before landing into the main project that I worked into – which was iWantTV.
iWantTV is an online streaming platform for the broadcasting network, that showcased not just the network’s films and shows, but any production that’s willing to be shown.
It’s my first time to manage multiple teams and first-hand stakeholders management. It was really a BIG learning experience on my end. This role was the most challenging I’ve had so far, I had lots of missed steps and it was a struggle really. But looking back at it, I realized that I did learn a lot from this experience.
Mistakes are lessons learned – I’ve had many incidents where I did wrong things, and my boss would really let me know about it, and demanded a lot from me, and expected me to be better everyday. I hated it during the time, but I realized that it was in fact good to raise those things to me, and I did eventually learn from my mistakes, and I am better off it now. I know how to deal with doubt, and miscommunication a lot better ever since. So advise to past-brian, It’s ok to be scolded, to be corrected, and to be wrong – you just have to learn from it.
This experience made me value my previous project managers and product owners. It truly takes a team effort to deliver a product to success. I am even move grateful to all my former colleagues, all my team mates. At the end of the day, I always say to myself that, each team that I work with, I should learn as much as I can, and share as much as I can. I know that teams aren’t permanent and in this fast pace software development universe, you always just have to be grateful.
